BR42 underpass. Dammam, Saudi Arabia

This underpass is on the King Fahd road in Dammam. The structure suffers pathologies like cracking of girders and filtrations. The cause was suspected to be the expansion of the Heavy Weight Concrete (HWC) used as ballast against buoyancy. The works done by SILGA consisted on:

  • Visual Inspection of the structure in order to gather as much initial information as possible about its condition, both the structure and the strengthening done.

  • Testing of carbon fiber strengthening, to evaluate if the strengthening has been properly executed.

  • Testing of HWC material, to assess its expansivity and its potential for future expansion

  • Monitoring. Follow up of deformations caused by the expansive HWC

  • Structural assessment, to determine the origin of pathologies, and to assess the adequacy of the strengthening done

  • Load test of the decks, to assess their current structural performance under load.
