National Guard Bridge. Riyadh, Saudi Arabi

The bridge is located over Riyadh 2nd Ring Road, at the interchange for National Guard. The deck was hit by a vehicle with excessive height. One of the outer girders was severely damaged and three others had less serious damages.

A visual inspection was done to have a clear understanding of the structural implications of the damage. The bottom reinforcement was bent and severed. Ducts were damaged but PT strands were intact. The lower part of the girder showed a highly fractured concrete which needed repair, including removal of loosen pieces. An analysis was done to investigate the risks associated with that removal operation to avoid a fracture like the one shown in the figure.

The capacity of the girder was restored by replacing the lost reinforcement and placing carbon fiber wrapping the rebuilt concrete section

SILGA’s scope of work included the inspection, assessment, design of remedial measures and assistance during repair.
